William Gaudelli Named Inaugural Dean of Georgia Tech’s College of Lifetime Learning

admin

Wed, 06/18/2025 - 09:21

Georgia Tech has announced William “Bill” Gaudelli as the inaugural dean of its College of Lifetime Learning, effective Aug. 1. Gaudelli brings more than 35 years of experience as an educator, researcher, and academic administrator to this role.

The College of Lifetime Learning, established in September 2024, is Georgia Tech’s seventh College and its first in more than three decades. It houses the Center for 21st Century Universities; the Center for Education Integrating Science, Mathematics, and Computing; Georgia Tech Professional Education; and Georgia Tech-Savannah. The College seeks to transform how individuals learn across their lifetime and how organizations provide access to reskilling and upskilling. With a focus on providing accessible, affordable, and transformative opportunities, it serves groups across the spectrum of learning, including K-12 students, working professionals, and lifelong learners.

“Bill Gaudelli’s expertise and leadership in educational innovation make him the perfect choice to lead our new College,” said interim Provost Karie Davis-Nozemack. “His vision for the College of Lifetime Learning’s future will guide us during this critical phase of academic development, faculty hiring, and growth. I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to the search committee, chaired by the Scheller College of Business’ Dean Anuj Mehrotra. The committee brought us world-class candidates, and their diligent efforts have identified an exceptional leader for this important role.”

Gaudelli is currently senior vice provost for Educational Innovation and Assessment at Lehigh University in Pennsylvania. Previously, he was the dean of the College of Education at Lehigh, where he developed innovative programs to connect traditional and nontraditional learning pathways. He has also served as chair of the Department of Arts and Humanities at Teachers College, Columbia University, where he directed the social studies program and later led the department.

An internationally recognized scholar on global citizenship education and teacher development, Gaudelli has authored more than 85 scholarly works, including several books on the topic of teaching and learning through a global lens. He also co-founded the Global Competence Certificate program, a blended learning initiative developed in partnership with World Savvy and the Asia Society. This certificate program fosters global education by leveraging digital technologies to deliver interactive learning experiences that build tangible global skills essential for living and working.

Gaudelli earned his master’s and doctoral degrees in social studies education from Rutgers University’s Graduate School of Education. He began his career teaching social studies at Hunterdon Central Regional High School in New Jersey, where he worked for a decade before transitioning to higher education.

“Learning is at the heart of what it means to be human — an ongoing process of living, growing, and evolving across the lifespan,” said Gaudelli. “My lifelong commitment to advancing learning is what drew me to Georgia Tech. The opportunity to help launch a new College dedicated to learners at every stage of life is both a privilege and a personal calling. I’m thrilled to join faculty, staff, and stakeholders across the Georgia Tech community in this bold initiative to expand access to purposeful, transformative learning for all.”

Under Gaudelli’s leadership, the College of Lifetime Learning will expand its innovative programs and continue to support Georgia Tech’s strategic goal of doubling its educational reach by 2030. When Talent Meets Opportunity: Celebrating the Impacts of Scholarships at Tech

dgivens8

Mon, 06/16/2025 - 15:38

A hum of anticipation filled McCamish Pavilion as more than 150 attendees turned their attention to the arena floor, not for a basketball game, but to hear about the impact of scholarships at Georgia Tech. On April 5, Georgia Tech hosted the second annual Scholarship Brunch, an event that brings scholarship recipients together with their benefactors to celebrate the potential unleashed when talent meets opportunity. Rick Clark, Georgia Tech’s executive director of Strategic Student Success, served as master of ceremonies, and he opened by highlighting why scholarship assistance is so vital to attracting top talent from Georgia and beyond. “One thing we’ve found to be clear is that admissions without affordability is not access,” he said.

Clark was followed by Georgia Tech President Ángel Cabrera, who recounted how a scholarship made it possible for him, “a middleclass kid from Madrid, Spain,” to come to Georgia Tech, earn his doctorate, and later return to serve as president. Like Clark, he underscored the urgency of making Tech affordable for top talent. “If we want to have the very best, smartest, kindest, most dedicated people” working to solve the world’s most pressing challenges, “we have to find them when they’re young and invest in them.”

Next, three current scholarship recipients and an alumna donor spoke. Fourth-year computer engineering student and Virginia native Elisa Miller recalled how scholarship support led her to Georgia Tech and how her education has positioned her for future success. While at Tech, the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) awarded Miller a Science, Mathematics, and Research for Transformation Scholarship to pursue a master’s degree in cybersecurity, with a DOD job awaiting her upon graduation. She offered advice to current and future Tech students, urging them to “seize every opportunity you are given to tackle every challenge you face.”

JahWill Fannings, a fourth-year business administration student from West Point, Georgia, described how his scholarship validated a bet he placed on himself in high school: He would apply only to Georgia Tech, and if admitted, he would only attend if he could do so without incurring debt. Thanks to a G. Wayne Clough Tech Promise Scholarship, that bet paid off. Freed from financial burdens, Fannings was able to launch his second company, Flowst8, an AI-powered workflow tool for musicians and other creatives. He credits the network of students, mentors, and industry leaders he was able to connect with as key to his upward trajectory. “Georgia Tech is more than a school,” he said. “It’s an ecosystem designed to help us all build toward success.”

Tampa, Florida, native Sofia Mesa, a first-year civil engineering student and recipient of the Godbold Family Foundation Scholarship, spoke of her desire to attend the Institute from a young age. When family road trips took her family through Atlanta, she would plead with her parents to stop and visit Tech Tower and the Kessler Campanile. What most excites her about the future, Mesa said, is what a Georgia Tech diploma signifies. “It’s more than just a piece of paper. It’s a statement that says, ‘I endured, I grew, and bring it on, because I am ready for whatever you can throw at me.’”

Closing out the program was Ronda Sides, IE 1983, who, along with her husband Alan Sides, ME 1983, endowed her first scholarship in 1999. Sides described her family’s return to Georgia after 18 years abroad. Witnessing firsthand the transformation the Institute had undergone inspired them to give back. Fittingly, after hearing from students about what they gain from scholarships, Sides related the impact of giving on donors. “Students, I know how good it feels when you look into your accounts and you see the money that has flowed in,” she said. “We as donors look into our accounts, and we see the money that flowed out and was sent to you — and it’s an exponentially better feeling.”

Plans are underway for next year’s Scholarship Brunch, which will once again celebrate remarkable talent and extraordinary generosity. Business administration student JahWill Fannings 16 “Georgia Tech is more than a school. It’s an ecosystem designed to help us all build toward su

Leslie Sharp Reappointed as Dean of Libraries at Georgia Tech

Thu, 05/29/2025 - 09:51

Following a comprehensive administrative review, Leslie Sharp has been reappointed to a second five-year term as dean of Libraries at Georgia Tech, effective July 1, 2025.

This decision follows a review process outlined in the Georgia Tech Faculty Handbook, which includes feedback from faculty, staff, students, and external library colleagues and an evaluation of Sharp’s performance and accomplishments during her term.

Sharp, who has served as dean of Libraries since July 1, 2020, has played a pivotal role in advancing Georgia Tech’s mission of supporting research, teaching, and learning across the Institute. Under her leadership, the Library has leveraged partnerships and resources to expand its collections. In one of its most effective initiatives, the Library partnered with units to make more affordable learning resources available for students. Sharp’s leadership has guided the Library’s focus on interdisciplinary collaboration and expanded services, saving students, faculty, and staff more than $2.12 million in 2024 through course reserves, interlibrary loan, Gadgets equipment lending, locker rentals, and room reservations. Her work has ensured that the Library is one of the most desirable places on campus to study, work, and collaborate.

“Leslie Sharp’s vision and dedication have strengthened the Georgia Tech Library’s role as a central hub for knowledge, innovation, and academic support for our entire community,” said Karie Davis-Nozemack, associate provost and incoming interim provost. “She brings a deep spirit of collaboration to her leadership, because she believes that the Library should serve and inspire every member of the Georgia Tech community — students, faculty, and staff alike. I am delighted that the Institute will continue to benefit from her impact for another term.”

Prior to her appointment as dean, Sharp served in dual roles as interim chief executive officer for the Library and associate vice provost for Graduate Education and Faculty Development. In these roles, she oversaw operations across the organization, expanded support for graduate and postdoctoral students, and implemented faculty development practices.

Sharp also teaches historic preservation in the College of Design, where she previously served as assistant dean of Academic Affairs and Outreach. She holds a Ph.D. in the history and sociology of technology and science and a master’s in the history of technology from Georgia Tech, a master’s from Middle Tennessee State University, and a bachelor’s from the University of Georgia.

“I am honored to serve another term as dean of the Georgia Tech Library. My vision for the Library has been to make it the scholarly heart of the Georgia Tech community, a place where everyone has an opportunity to thrive,” said Sharp. “I love my colleagues and am thrilled to have the opportunity to continue our critical work in supporting the academic and research mission of the Institute while furthering student and faculty success.”

The review committee consisted of the following faculty, staff, and administrators:

Larry Jacobs, Senior Vice Provost for Education and Learning (Committee Chair)

John Mack Freeman, Assistant Dean for Interdisciplinary Initiatives, Director of Clough Undergraduate Learning Commons, and Head of Public Services Librarian, Librarian II, Georgia Tech Library

Marlee Dorn Givens, Instruction Manager and Librarian IV, Georgia Tech Library

Samuel Graham III, Chief Administrative Officer, Georgia Tech Library

Shandra Jones, IT Business Analyst II, Georgia Tech Library

Jennifer Leavey, Assistant Dean for Faculty Mentoring, College of Sciences, and Principal Academic Professional in Biological Sciences

Jody Thompson, Assistant Dean for Archives, Records Management, and Digital Curation and Archivist IV, Georgia Tech Library

Danielle Willkens, Associate Professor, School of Architecture

The Georgia Tech community congratulates Dean Sharp on her reappointment and looks forward to her continued contributions to the Library and Georgia Tech community.

Writer: Julian Hills, Executive Communications, Institute Communications

Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs Search Begins

admin

Wed, 05/28/2025 - 07:44

Georgia Tech has begun a national search for its next Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs. The search committee, chaired by Tim Lieuwen, executive vice president for Research and professor of Aerospace Engineering, includes a mix of faculty, staff, and students from across Georgia Tech, as well as external stakeholders.

“The leader of our academic enterprise plays a critical role in advancing Georgia Tech's mission by expanding access, promoting student success, supporting faculty, and strengthening the academic excellence that defines us,” said President Ángel Cabrera. “Thank you to Tim Lieuwen and the entire search committee for your thoughtful and thorough work in helping us identify our next Provost.”

The search committee welcomes applications from both external candidates and current members of the Georgia Tech community. The provost reports directly to the president and will play a pivotal role in shaping the Institute's strategic vision.

To support the effort, Georgia Tech has retained the executive search firm WittKieffer. Representatives from WittKieffer will meet with faculty, staff, students, and external stakeholders to gather input on the preferred qualifications and attributes of the next provost.

Several virtual town hall events will provide the opportunity for the broader Georgia Tech community to contribute to the conversation. Faculty, staff, and students are encouraged to participate:

Monday, June 2, 2:30-3:30pm - Open to all Georgia Tech community members. Register to participate via Zoom.

Tuesday, June 3, 1:00-2:00pm - Open to Georgia Tech Staff. Co-hosted by Georgia Tech Staff Council. Register to participate via Zoom.

Tuesday, June 3, 3:00-4:00pm - Open to all Georgia Tech faculty members. Co-hosted by faculty governance. Register to participate via Zoom.

Tuesday, June 3, 4:30-5:30pm - Open to all Georgia Tech students. Co-hosted by Georgia Tech Undergraduate and Graduate SGA. Register to participate via Zoom.

Anyone unable to attend a town hall event is welcome to share their feedback using the anonymous Community Feedback Survey. Candidate recommendations and questions are encouraged and may be directed to the WittKieffer team at GeorgiaTechProvost@wittkieffer.com.

For ongoing updates about the search, visit the Provost Search page. Georgia Tech Faculty and Programs Recognized With 2025 Regents’ Awards

admin

Thu, 05/22/2025 - 08:05

The Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia (USG) recently honored Georgia Tech with 25 distinctions, awards, and reappointments reflecting the Institute’s ongoing commitment to academic excellence, innovative practices, and impactful leadership.

The Board of Regents (BOR) may grant Regents’ distinctions for a period of three years to exceptional members of the USG’s academic and research community. To receive a Regents’ distinction, a candidate must be unanimously recommended by key leaders at their university: the president, the chief academic officer, the dean, and three additional faculty members appointed by the university president. Following this, final approval must be obtained from both the chancellor and the BOR Committee on Academic Affairs. The renewal process follows similarly rigorous guidelines.

These prestigious distinctions honor faculty and staff who have demonstrated exceptional achievements and have had an outstanding impact on their institutions.

Award for Excellence in High-Impact Practices

This year, Georgia Tech’s Vertically Integrated Projects program was honored with the Regents’ Award for Excellence in High-Impact Practices and Experiential Learning. This recognition underscores the program’s success in engaging students across disciplines to tackle real-world challenges through collaborative, project-based learning.

The following Georgia Tech faculty members were appointed or reappointed to distinguished positions:

Regents’ Researcher

Stephen Balakirsky, Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI), Aerospace, Transportation & Advanced Systems Laboratory *Reappointment

Anton Bryksin, Parker H.

If you’re worried about artificial intelligence (AI) taking your job, Georgia Tech’s Mark Riedl says that probably won’t happen. However, losing your job to someone who knows how to leverage AI tools in the workplace is something to be concerned about.

To help people beyond campus understand what AI tools are available and how to use them effectively, Riedl recently co-taught an online course by CNBC Make It titled How to Use AI to Be More Successful at Work.

“The running joke right now is that AI will not replace people, but people who use AI will replace people who do not use AI,” said Riedl, professor in the School of Interactive Computing.

The 90-minute course offers tips and hacks to users who are:

Inexperienced in using AI tools in the workplace and are looking to grow in professional development

Small business owners who are overwhelmed with administrative tasks, marketing, industry research, and data analysis

Job seekers looking to stand out from the crowd

People seeking to improve their work-life balance

Riedl, whose research focuses on human-centered and explainable AI, taught sections of the course on the foundation of AI. One of the biggest sections of the course covers large-language models (LLMs).

“When large language models were put forward as chatbots, this was the first time that any person out in the world could naturally interact with an AI system without having to learn to program or write code,” Riedl said.

For less than $100, the on-demand course includes a detailed workbook that helps users consider each aspect of their jobs and daily lives and how AI can improve them.

The Big Picture

CNBC’s use of Riedl’s expertise is one of many examples of how College of Computing faculty are leading the way in teaching AI literacy.

David Joyner, executive director of online education, said Georgia Tech’s Online Master of Science in Computer Science (OMSCS) program continues to innovate with AI literacy in mind.

[RELATED: Experts Say Life-long Learning is a Must to Keep Pace with Generative AI]

He said companies and employees alike are learning to navigate AI. Companies are considering AI from a general perspective, focusing on how it can make their businesses more efficient, while employees are using it to become more versatile and valuable workers.

“It’s an interesting dichotomy,” Joyner said. “If companies are trying to figure out how to operate more efficiently, and you have people using these tools to be more productive, at what point does the company need to prioritize using these tools instead of letting their use be organic? We’re still in this experimental phase.”

In a conversation with former College of Computing interim dean Alex Orso, Joyner discusses how OMSCS is staying at the forefront in equipping students with the latest technology skills they need to be successful in a fluctuating industry.

“We must figure out what generative AI can do well and properly leverage it so we’re not cutting out the foundation of a building and replacing it with sticks,” Joyner said.

The complete conversation between Joyner and Orso is available on the College's Youtube channel.

Thesis on Human-Centered AI Earns Honors from International Computing Organization

dgivens8

Tue, 04/22/2025 - 10:30

A Georgia Tech alum’s dissertation introduced ways to make artificial intelligence (AI) more accessible, interpretable, and accountable. Although it’s been a year since his doctoral defense, Zijie (Jay) Wang’s (Ph.D. ML-CSE 2024) work continues to resonate with researchers.

Wang is a recipient of the 2025 Outstanding Dissertation Award from the Association for Computing Machinery Special Interest Group on Computer-Human Interaction (ACM SIGCHI). The award recognizes Wang for his lifelong work on democratizing human-centered AI.

“Throughout my Ph.D. and industry internships, I observed a gap in existing research: there is a strong need for practical tools for applying human-centered approaches when designing AI systems,” said Wang, now a safety researcher at OpenAI.

“My work not only helps people understand AI and guide its behavior but also provides user-friendly tools that fit into existing workflows.”

[Related: Georgia Tech College of Computing Swarms to Yokohama, Japan, for CHI 2025]

Wang’s dissertation presented techniques in visual explanation and interactive guidance to align AI models with user knowledge and values. The work culminated from years of research, fellowship support, and internships.

Wang’s most influential projects formed the core of his dissertation. These included:

CNN Explainer: an open-source tool developed for deep-learning beginners. Since its release in July 2020, more than 436,000 global visitors have used the tool.

DiffusionDB: a first-of-its-kind large-scale dataset that lays a foundation to help people better understand generative AI. This work could lead to new research in detecting deepfakes and designing human-AI interaction tools to help people more easily use these models.

GAM Changer: an interface that empowers users in healthcare, finance, or other domains to edit ML models to include knowledge and values specific to their domain, which improves reliability.

GAM Coach: an interactive ML tool that could help people who have been rejected for a loan by automatically letting an applicant know what is needed for them to receive loan approval.

Farsight: a tool that alerts developers when they write prompts in large language models that could be harmful and misused.

“I feel extremely honored and lucky to receive this award, and I am deeply grateful to many who have supported me along the way, including Polo, mentors, collaborators, and friends,” said Wang, who was advised by School of Computational Science and Engineering (CSE) Professor Polo Chau.

“This recognition also inspired me to continue striving to design and develop easy-to-use tools that help everyone to easily interact with AI systems.”

Like Wang, Chau advised Georgia Tech alumnus Fred Hohman (Ph.D. CSE 2020). Hohman won the ACM SIGCHI Outstanding Dissertation Award in 2022.

Chau’s group synthesizes machine learning (ML) and visualization techniques into scalable, interactive, and trustworthy tools. These tools increase understanding and interaction with large-scale data and ML models.

Chau is the associate director of corporate relations for the Machine Learning Center at Georgia Tech. Wang called the School of CSE his home unit while a student in the ML program under Chau.

Wang is one of five recipients of this year’s award to be presented at the 2025 Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems (CHI 2025). The conference occurs April 25-May 1 in Yokohama, Japan.

SIGCHI is the world’s largest association of human-computer interaction professionals and practitioners. The group sponsors or co-sponsors 26 conferences, including CHI.

Wang’s outstanding dissertation award is the latest recognition of a career decorated with achievement.

Months after graduating from Georgia Tech, Forbes named Wang to its 30 Under 30 in Science for 2025 for his dissertation. Wang was one of 15 Yellow Jackets included in nine different 30 Under 30 lists and the only Georgia Tech-affiliated individual on the 30 Under 30 in Science list.

While a Georgia Tech student, Wang earned recognition from big names in business and technology. He received the Apple Scholars in AI/ML Ph.D. Fellowship in 2023 and was in the 2022 cohort of the J.P. Morgan AI Ph.D. Fellowships Program.

Along with the CHI award, Wang’s dissertation earned him awards this year at banquets across campus. The Georgia Tech chapter of Sigma Xi presented Wang with the Best Ph.D. Thesis Award. He also received the College of Computing’s Outstanding Dissertation Award.

“Georgia Tech attracts many great minds, and I’m glad that some, like Jay, chose to join our group,” Chau said. “It has been a joy to work alongside them and witness the many wonderful things they have accomplished, and with many more to come in their careers.”

Georgia Tech Retains Spot on Forbes’ New Ivies List

Georgia Tech Retains Spot on Forbes’ New Ivies List

admin

Fri, 04/04/2025 - 16:50

Georgia Tech has again been recognized among Forbes’ New Ivies, highlighting its favorable standing among executives and hiring managers.

The survey of more than 380 C-suite leaders, vice presidents, and other managers revealed the 10 public and private colleges that "are attracting the best and the brightest” and graduating students who are “outpacing most Ivy Leaguers in the eyes of employers."

Employers are increasingly valuing students from the list of new Ivies, with 38% saying they are more likely to hire graduates from non-Ivy public colleges than five years ago. The percentage of respondents who say they are less likely to hire Ivy League graduates increased from 33% to 37% since last year.

Responses indicate a perception that public university graduates enter the workforce with a better ability to innovate, adapt, and master new skills because of more highly collaborative environments on their campuses.

To be considered, Forbes evaluated colleges based on three criteria: size, selectivity, and test scores. The survey was distributed to subscribers of Forbes' C-suite newsletters.

Georgia Tech recently received a record 67,000 applications and continues to be one of the fastest-growing universities in the country. It also maintains its status as a top-value college with a strong return on investment.
