                        &lt;div&gt;&lt;p&gt;An electrochemical process developed at Georgia Tech could offer new protection against bacterial infections without contributing to growing antibiotic resistance.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The approach capitalizes on the natural antibacterial properties of copper and creates incredibly small needle-like structures on the surface of stainless steel to kill harmful bacteria like E. coli and Staphylococcus.                         &lt;div&gt;&lt;p&gt;Two College of Engineering professors are among the newest members of the &lt;a href="https://www.nae.edu/"&gt;National Academy of Engineering (NAE)&lt;/a&gt;, the organization &lt;a href="https://www.nae.edu/312025/NAENewClass2024"&gt;announced Feb. 6.&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;&lt;a href="https://ce.gatech.edu/directory/person/patricia-l-mokhtarian"&gt;Patricia Mokhtarian&lt;/a&gt; and &lt;a href="https://www.chbe.gatech.edu/directory/person/david-sholl"&gt;David Sholl&lt;/a&gt; are part of a 2024 class that includes 114&lt;strong&gt; &lt;/strong&gt;new members and 21 international members. Election to the NAE is among the highest professional recognitions for engineers and an honor bestowed on just 2,600 professionals worldwide.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;New members are nominated and voted on by the Academy’s existing membership. With Mokhtarian and Sholl, Georgia Tech now has 48 NAE members.&lt;/p&gt;

                        &lt;div&gt;&lt;p&gt;What started as a simple errand to deposit a check at a bank drive-through became the kind of “aha” moment found mostly in books and movies.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Georgia Tech researchers had been working on an idea to simplify traditional direct air capture (DAC) systems. Their approach used ambient wind flow to draw air across a new kind of coated carbon fiber to grab CO2. That would eliminate the loud fans used in many systems. And the carbon fiber strands could be quickly heated to release the captured carbon dioxide with minimal heat loss, boosting efficiency.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;But they were struggling with how to deploy these new sorbent-coated carbon fibers for maximum effect.&lt;/p&gt;
