Environmental Health and Safety Earns National Awards

admin

Wed, 07/30/2025 - 12:39

The Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Department at Georgia Tech develops programs and provides oversight, consultation, training, and other specialized services to assist the Tech community in meeting its public health, occupational and research safety, environmental protection, and compliance responsibilities. Housed within the Infrastructure and Sustainability unit, EHS consists of more than 30 dedicated professionals focused on ensuring safety across various domains, including biological, environmental, fire, general campus, hazardous waste, laboratory and chemical, and radiation safety.

The department was recently recognized nationally by the Campus Safety, Health, and Environmental Management Association (CSHEMA) with four Institutional Awards for 2025, marking the second consecutive year the department has received top honors. This year’s awards highlight innovative programs in makerspace safety, chemical inventory reconciliation, team-based safety culture, and respiratory protection tailored to lab environments.

In total, Georgia Tech EHS has now received seven CSHEMA awards in two years, showcasing the team’s commitment to building a proactive, collaborative safety culture through strategic communication, innovation, and continuous improvement.

EHS Associate Vice President Jerel Harris said, “We’re proud to receive these recognitions from CSHEMA for the second year in a row. While the EHS team has worked hard to develop tools, resources, and programs that support a proactive safety culture, these achievements are only possible because of the strong commitment from our campus partners. Ultimately, safety compliance is their responsibility, and we’re grateful for the collaboration that makes Georgia Tech a leader in this space.”

Georgia Tech EHS received the following awards:

Comprehensive EHS Marketing and Communications Program Award for The Makers’ Protection Initiative

Marketing Campaign Award for The Chemical Reconciliation Campaign

Innovation Award for Safety Culture for The General Safety Team Initiatives

Innovation Award for Process Improvement for the Respiratory Protection Program and The Makers’ Protection Program

New System Aims to Improve Parking Experience

New System Aims to Improve Parking Experience

admin

Fri, 06/20/2025 - 11:39

Parking and Transportation Services (PTS) will begin implementing a new parking access system this summer to improve the parking experience for those traveling to and from campus. The new equipment will be installed in all 21 gated parking decks and surface lots on the Georgia Tech campus starting in July. Once fully operational, the new system will enable PTS to better track and evaluate parking usage patterns campuswide and identify opportunities for improvement.

“Georgia Tech has been using legacy parking systems that can no longer fully meet the needs of our growing campus community,” said Melinda Alonzo, senior director for PTS. “This new modernized system will deliver an improved and more consistent service experience while providing real-time parking occupancy data — both of which are essential as our student enrollment continues to grow and we welcome more employees back to campus in the 2025-26 academic year.”

The new system will streamline and modernize parking operations in a variety of ways, including:

Hands-Free Entry and Exit (Coming Fall 2025). Accommodates a vehicle tag to allow instant access upon approaching the gate. Vehicle tags will be available to permit holders during the fall semester. Permit holders will continue to use their BuzzCards for seamless access as the system is being implemented on campus throughout the summer.

Touchscreen Kiosks. Improves user interaction with easy-to-read displays.

Mobile Pay. Tap and pay using a credit card or smartphone.

Cashless Machines. Speeds up exit times and reduces wait times.

QR Code Ticket Payment. Pay by phone before exiting by scanning the ticket’s QR code.

Direct Intercom Assistance. Instantly connect with parking dispatch if help is needed.

Event and Hotel Guest Programming. Specialized parking options for smoother guest experiences.

Online Guest Parking Validation. No more stickers, and an improved online validation process.

Alonzo added that these new features will enable data-informed decision-making to enhance the customer experience and ensure smarter, more efficient use of our parking resources. With real-time occupancy insights, the PTS team can better manage parking access for all campus stakeholders and make better use of available capacity.

More information, including implementation timelines, affected parking lots, and availability of vehicle tags, will be posted on the PTS website, pts.gatech.edu.

My Green Lab Initiative Drives Sustainable Practices in Campus Labs

admin

Thu, 04/17/2025 - 18:33

Laboratories are central to Georgia Tech’s mission of driving groundbreaking research, innovative discoveries, and life-saving technology. However, these labs are also significant consumers of resources. With nearly 900,000 square feet of campus lab space, labs use, on average, 10 times the electricity and four times the water of a typical classroom. They also produce most of the hazardous waste on campus. In 2023, Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) brought the issue to the attention of the Office of Sustainability, which led the charge in 2024 to launch a My Green Lab working group and sponsored three campus labs to work toward certification, including the School of Biological Sciences Instructional Labs, the Institute for Bioengineering and Bioscience’s Molecular Evolution Core Facility, and the Takayama Lab.

My Green Lab is an international community of scientists dedicated to making laboratories more sustainable and resource-efficient. To achieve My Green Lab certification, each lab conducted an initial assessment to evaluate their current sustainability practices and identified areas of improvement, including waste, water, and electricity. Labs were encouraged to adopt measures such as defrosting and cleaning refrigerator coils, using timers for test equipment, and promoting best practices. Alicia Wood-Jones, Lab and Safety Officer for EH&S, was a key leader in the working group. Known for her work on the Chemical Reclamation Committee, Wood-Jones’ vision and drive are instrumental in finding innovative solutions to long-standing challenges in lab decommissioning.

She thanks her colleagues, including the EH&S Lab and Chemical Safety Team, “for their help and vision. We believe that even small steps forward can make a big difference here at Georgia Tech. I am so appreciative to all involved. I look forward to future collaborations with lab members on campus.”

Katherine Nguyen and her team in the Takayama Lab construct multicellular models and dissect cell signaling pathways to understand disease physiology. While pursuing this research, the lab team activated measures to responsibly manage their lab resources, such as recycling in the lab, keeping centrifuges at room temperature when not needed, and consolidating orders.

“I’m incredibly happy and proud to have been a part of this program and appreciate everyone’s hard work to try to make Georgia Tech a more sustainable campus,” she said. “Our lab was the first academic lab at Georgia Tech to get certified. Sometimes, graduate students want to be greener, but don’t know how to or feel like we have the power to. My Green Lab helped identify feasible options for labs to reduce their waste. Even if labs couldn’t make every single change, any improvement is a positive change.”

Sustainability efforts at the Molecular Evolution Core Laboratory are led by Anton Bryksin, Shweta Biliya, and Adam Fallah. The lab is pioneering Tip-Cycle, a program that sterilizes and recycles pipettes for reuse. This lab also monitors campus blackwater for diseases such as Covid-19, using thousands of pipettes in their work. Faced with resource constraints during the pandemic, these researchers developed innovative solutions to maximize resource efficiency. “We’ve always wanted to make our lab practices more sustainable, but weren’t sure where to start. My Green Lab gave us the tools and guidance to turn that intention into action. This certification represents the dedication of our entire team to create a more sustainable environment,” said Biliya, a Georgia Tech research scientist.

The My Green Lab initiative offers an approach for transforming campus labs into more efficient spaces while producing less hazardous waste. By prioritizing sustainability in our labs, Georgia Tech can have both a global reputation for research and responsible resource management.

Visit the Office of Sustainability for more information on My Green Lab.

Honoring Excellence: Three Inspiring Women Shaping the Georgia Tech Campus

admin

Thu, 03/20/2025 - 10:48

Earlier this month, Georgia Tech celebrated three events — the concrete topping out of Tech Square Phase 3, a beam signing for the Fanning Student-Athlete Performance Center, and the grand opening of the permanent outdoor art installation Pathway of Progress: Celebrating Georgia Tech Women. What all of these events have in common is that they have been guided by female construction project managers. Two of the three are alumnae, and all three are expertly shaping the Georgia Tech built environment.

Their attention to detail, collaboration skills, and leadership serve as inspiration for not only female students but also their colleagues in the Planning, Design, and Construction department within Infrastructure and Sustainability. As we celebrate Women’s History Month, it is an ideal time to spotlight these remarkable women who embody the spirit of progress and service at Georgia Tech.

Lindsey Cottingham and the George and Scheller Towers at Tech Square: A Tech Alumna Leading by Design

With a civil engineering background from Georgia Tech (CE 2005, M.S. CE 2006), Lindsey has spent almost eight years working in the Institute’s Planning, Design, and Construction Department. She worked in construction management for educational environments before joining Tech, but she was drawn back by its reputation for innovative building design and long-term planning.

Her contributions span key developments such as the Price Gilbert and Crosland Tower Library renovation project and the Mac Nease Baseball Park at Russ Chandler Stadium addition, among many others. Previously, she managed wellness centers for Spelman College and The Lovett School, along with more than $100 million in K-12 school projects. Her journey into construction project management began with an interest in architecture, inspired by childhood walks through historical neighborhoods in St. Louis with her father. Over time, her focus shifted to solving tangible challenges, leading her to structural engineering.

With the Tech Square project rising daily before our eyes, according to Lindsey, one of the most interesting things about the project is that the building is expected to use about 80% less energy than a comparably sized, existing Atlanta office building. Through a careful balancing of window-to-wall ratio and detailing of the facade insulation, along with high-performance insulated glass and the airtightness of joints in the curtain wall, the building’s HVAC requirements are greatly reduced.

Lindsey reflects on the joy of seeing the completed buildings that she has helped bring to life: “It’s amazing to look at something and know all the little decisions and time that went into making it what it is. As an alumna, it’s fulfilling to know I’ve made a mark on this campus.”

Heather Hardie and the Fanning Student-Athlete Performance Center: Forging a Path to Building Excellence

This accomplished alumna (M.S. BC 2000) joined the Institute as a project manager after spending two decades as a general contractor. With an undergraduate degree in art and experience teaching K-12, her transition to construction was both unexpected and inspired.

Before joining Tech, one of Heather's career highlights included the renovation of Benjamin E. Mays High School, where she faced the immense challenge of rebuilding the structure's spine while maintaining the integrity of the existing building. She relied on her experience of bringing the right people together, creative problem-solving, and trusting the process for a successful and award-winning renovation.

Her current project at Georgia Tech, the Fanning Student-Athlete Performance Center, has her collaborating with and managing various campus stakeholders – most notably Georgia Tech Athletics. According to Heather, one of the most interesting things about the project is discovering the hidden secrets that lie within the historic footprint of Bobby Dodd Stadium.

Heather attributes much of her success to having a good mentor who emphasized the importance of balanced collaboration and innovative problem-solving. The process of creating a new building can be challenging on many levels. “Being a builder can sometimes be a thankless job. But once you turn over the building, there is a huge reward in seeing people enjoying the space,” she said, noting how cool it is to see one of her buildings in a movie. “I can say, ‘Hey, I built that!’”

Carla Barbour and the ‘Pathway of Progress’: Driving Change Through Community Impact

With a career spanning more than three decades, Carla has spent the last nine years at Georgia Tech making a meaningful mark on campus. With degrees in economics, interior design, and a Master of Science Law, her decision to work in higher education was influenced by her extensive experience managing projects for nonprofits like the American Red Cross after 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina, various federal agencies, and the U.S. Armed Forces. She finds immense satisfaction in projects that drive change on a community-wide scale.

At Tech, she is particularly proud of her projects such as the ACC Network Operations facility, the Marcus Nanotechnology Cell Manufacturing Lab, the 10th Street Chiller Plant Electrical Resiliency project, and the recently completed Pathway of Progress: Celebrating Georgia Tech Women.

According to Carla, one of the most interesting things about the project is the women honorees, particularly the legacies of some of the first women who attended Georgia Tech. In addition to the existing honorees, Pathway of Progress was designed with more than 3,000 blank tiles for future honorees.

Reflecting on her journey, Carla emphasizes the importance of listening and adaptability in overcoming the challenges of project lifecycles. Her father, who she describes as the epitome of a servant leader, was her first mentor and remains a guiding influence in her career.

“It does feel great to see a building or a project I have worked on achieve its completion and open to the public," she says.

Improvements to Campus Chilled Water System Continue During Spring Break

Improvements to Campus Chilled Water System Continue During Spring Break

admin

Tue, 03/11/2025 - 18:23

Beginning Saturday, March 15, a planned outage for the campus chilled water distribution system will allow the current resiliency improvement project to test installations, continue with upgrades, and tie in the recently announced Curran Street Residence Hall. This spring break time frame leverages lower occupancy in campus buildings.

“We appreciate the understanding and support from the campus community during this planned outage as we continue the work to improve our systems and build resiliency for the future." said Greg Spiro, executive director for Infrastructure. "While we have completed repairs associated with the chilled water failure that occurred in July, the work at Harrison Square is ongoing to address utility systems affected during the repair work in addition to the renovation needs of the D.M. Smith building.”

The chilled water distribution system provides cool air to campus buildings and helps ensure the appropriate indoor temperatures for data centers to operate successfully, research labs to perform optimally, and the campus community to study, research, and work comfortably.

A similar planned outage occurred during winter break. The Office of Emergency Management (OEM) will again monitor the project and provide updates as needed. Each building’s Continuity of Operations Plan will be on file with OEM, as these plans ensure that each building has an individual who knows what to do if problems arise.

Information regarding this outage plan has been shared with campus building managers, and discussions with campus stakeholders have been ongoing since February.

March 15 – March 21 affected buildings:

Klaus Advanced Computing Building

Cherry Emerson Building

March 17 – 18 affected buildings:

Eighth Street Apartments

Woodruff North and South residence halls

While not expected, this work may require a West Campus outage for one day — Monday, March 17. If such an event occurs, the following buildings would experience a disruption of service:

West Campus residence halls (see full list here)

West Village Dining

J. Allen Couch Building

Paper Tricentennial Building

Georgia Tech Police Department Building

Should this occur, stakeholders will be notified via email by the Office of Emergency Management.

View the map and building list here.

The Campus Construction Journey Continues

The Campus Construction Journey Continues

admin

Wed, 02/12/2025 - 16:15

Across campus, one cannot help but encounter the familiar orange and white construction cones and barriers. For more than a year, they have seemingly been everywhere. Several students — and Buzz — even commandeered one of the orange barriers during the January snow days and used it as a sled.

Now, back in its original location, the barrier serves as an important safety mechanism, and the safety of the campus community is paramount during these active projects. The Georgia Tech Police Department (GTPD) and campus environmental safety teams regularly review project parameters, recommending proper signage and safety protocols.

Staying informed is another way of staying safe. To help the community stay current on the status of campus construction, team members within Infrastructure and Sustainability created an interactive tool that tracks each construction project. With a combination map and calendar, users can see when projects are scheduled to begin and end. Additionally, ADA routes can be located by zooming in on individual projects. Click here to try it out.

Read below for the latest information on campus construction and renovation projects.

Recently Completed

Facchetti Laboratories/Manufacturing Related Disciplines Complex (MRDC)
In the MRDC building, renovation wrapped on five wet labs, three supporting office spaces for the primary investigator, and his student assistants. Four wet labs were completely renovated with entirely new systems, including chemical and polypropylene fume hoods. These updated labs will support the research team and their work in materials science, specifically wearable and flexible electronic circuit technologies.

Soon to Wrap Up

‘Pathway of Progress: Celebrating Georgia Tech Women’
With the recent removal of construction fencing, the walkway from central to east campus is now open for foot traffic, and the Pathway of Progress installation nears completion. This permanent tribute to the achievements and legacies of Tech women, and the accompanying digital experience,, will officially open Saturday, March 8, with a campuswide celebration. Learn more.

East Campus Streetscapes
Along Techwood Drive and the east side of campus, the renovation of sidewalks and roadways will improve pedestrian and micromobility (bicycles, scooters, and skateboards) access while improving campus connectivity. The remaining phase of work includes the revised intersection of Fourth Street and Techwood Drive along with milling and paving the road from Fourth Street to Ferst Drive. The project is expected to be completed in late April.

Ferst Drive Realignment and Cycle Track
The excitement around this project continues as the northern arc of the cycle track from Sixth Street to the mid-block crossing at the Klaus Advanced Computing Building and the Mac Neese Baseball Park opened earlier this semester. Individuals who use a micromobility vehicle on campus must obey the rules of the road or will be subject to citation by GTPD.

Phases 3 and 4 are currently in progress and encompass the area across from the Campus Recreation Center near the Exhibition Hall, the ISyE Annex, and the Groseclose Building. Phase 3 will realign Ferst Drive at Regents Drive, eliminating the traffic signal and enabling connectivity to the future bicycle infrastructure southwest of campus. Phase 4 addresses Ferst Drive from Fowler Street to Williams Street in Tech Square. The entire project is slated for completion by May. Read more here.

In Progress

Aerospace Engineering Aircraft Hangar
Located in the North Avenue Research Area, the state-of-the-art, 10,000-square-foot aircraft hangar will house an electric powertrain laboratory, a propulsion system test cell, an avionics lab, composite fabrication areas, and an area for integrating prototype aircraft. A particular focus will be electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft and other electric aircraft. The project is scheduled for completion in the spring. Read more about the Aerospace Engineering Hangar.

Artificial Intelligence Manufacturing Pilot Facility (AIMPF)
The Advanced Manufacturing Pilot Facility (AMPF) is a research and development facility associated with the Georgia Tech Manufacturing Institute. As a translational research facility, AMPF is focused on the scale-up of manufacturing capabilities from laboratory scale to pilot-scale industrial applications.

The Artificial Intelligence Manufacturing Pilot Facility (AIMPF) is the next stage in the program’s development. This new phase of the facility will integrate artificial intelligence, robotics, and augmented reality to develop and test a new generation of manufacturing systems and processes. As a key component of the Georgia AI Manufacturing Technology corridor, AIMPF will develop and deploy talent and innovation in artificial intelligence for all manufacturing sectors.

D.M. Smith Building Renewal
The building’s infrastructure will be upgraded, adding wheelchair access, an elevator, and new mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems. A virtual lab and hoteling space will be created for the School of Public Policy. Interior demolition and abatement are complete, with interior construction well underway. The exterior of the building is undergoing repairs, the brick is being repointed, and new windows are being installed. In support of campus climate goals, electrification plans are in place, and the renovated building will no longer rely on steam from the central plant for daily operation. Renovations are scheduled for completion this fall.

Harrison Square Infrastructure Improvements for Campus Chilled Water System
The campus chilled water distribution system is responsible for providing cool air for campus buildings. In July, a pipe failure 20 feet below Harrison Square resulted in the loss of air conditioning to many buildings. The repair is complete, but with the area excavated, teams in Infrastructure and Sustainability are fully implementing improvements to the system in this area, making it more efficient and resilient. This work is ongoing, and a completion date is in progress. Fanning Student-Athlete Performance Center
Construction continues on the 100,000-square-foot facility, which will feature strength and conditioning space, nutrition areas, sports medicine offices, ticket sales, dining, and academic support space. In addition, the building will include state-of-the-art sports science and analytics spaces. Currently, steel structuring is ongoing through March, with exterior work — brick, stone, and roofing — beginning shortly thereafter.

The southbound lane of Techwood Drive adjacent to the project will remain closed until project completion in 2026. Read more here.

Curran Street Residence Hall
The first new residence hall on campus since 2005, this new facility for first-year students is located on the west side of campus along Northside Drive between Eighth and Ninth streets. The 191,000-square-foot building will contain 862 beds with rooms configured for double occupancy and the flexibility to rearrange the in-room furniture layout, as well as collaborative learning spaces, community lounges, and group kitchens. Foundation work, structural steel and framing, and underground utility work are currently in progress. Project completion is scheduled for 2026. Read more here.

Tech Square Phase 3
Rising daily, this project has reached 18 stories, with a projected topping-out targeted for March. This phase of Tech Square will include 415,000 square feet of academic and research space within two high-rise towers anchored by a large plaza and retail space at street level. The 14-story Scheller Tower will house the MBA and Executive Education programs for the Scheller College of Business and is named in recognition of the philanthropic commitment of Roberta and Ernest Scheller Jr., IM 1952, HON Ph.D. 2013. The 18-story George Tower, named to recognize Penny and Bill George, IE 1964, HON Ph.D. 2008, will be the new home for the H. Milton Stewart School of Industrial and Systems Engineering. The projected occupancy date is early 2026.

In collaboration with subject matter experts in Infrastructure and Sustainability, the Office of Sustainability is offering a series of Living Learning Campus Pathways to provide unique, immersive learning opportunities that connect classroom knowledge with real-world experience in sustainability. Applications for the Living Campus Student Fellowship, the newest offering, will open this month for students interested in gaining paid experience.

Living Learning Campus Pathways

Pathway 1: Data Requests
Students, faculty, and staff can request campus data, including campus energy use and campus water consumption, for student projects and research. Data requests are available year-round. To date, Infrastructure and Sustainability has provided data for more than 200 requests. To request data, visit I&S Data Reporting & Analytics Request.

Pathway 2: Project Partnership
This pathway enables students, faculty, and staff to choose from a list of predetermined projects that advance campus sustainability and to work with staff members in Infrastructure and Sustainability.
