Georgia Tech has announced William “Bill” Gaudelli as the inaugural dean of its College of Lifetime Learning, effective Aug. 1. Gaudelli brings more than 35 years of experience as an educator, researcher, and academic administrator to this role.

The College of Lifetime Learning, established in September 2024, is Georgia Tech’s seventh College and its first in more than three decades. It houses the Center for 21st Century Universities; the Center for Education Integrating Science, Mathematics, and Computing; Georgia Tech Professional Education; and Georgia Tech-Savannah. The College seeks to transform how individuals learn across their lifetime and how organizations provide access to reskilling and upskilling. With a focus on providing accessible, affordable, and transformative opportunities, it serves groups across the spectrum of learning, including K-12 students, working professionals, and lifelong learners.

“Bill Gaudelli’s expertise and leadership in educational innovation make him the perfect choice to lead our new College,” said interim Provost Karie Davis-Nozemack. “His vision for the College of Lifetime Learning’s future will guide us during this critical phase of academic development, faculty hiring, and growth. I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to the search committee, chaired by the Scheller College of Business’ Dean Anuj Mehrotra. The committee brought us world-class candidates, and their diligent efforts have identified an exceptional leader for this important role.”

Gaudelli is currently senior vice provost for Educational Innovation and Assessment at Lehigh University in Pennsylvania. Previously, he was the dean of the College of Education at Lehigh, where he developed innovative programs to connect traditional and nontraditional learning pathways. He has also served as chair of the Department of Arts and Humanities at Teachers College, Columbia University, where he directed the social studies program and later led the department.

An internationally recognized scholar on global citizenship education and teacher development, Gaudelli has authored more than 85 scholarly works, including several books on the topic of teaching and learning through a global lens. He also co-founded the Global Competence Certificate program, a blended learning initiative developed in partnership with World Savvy and the Asia Society. This certificate program fosters global education by leveraging digital technologies to deliver interactive learning experiences that build tangible global skills essential for living and working.

Gaudelli earned his master’s and doctoral degrees in social studies education from Rutgers University’s Graduate School of Education. He began his career teaching social studies at Hunterdon Central Regional High School in New Jersey, where he worked for a decade before transitioning to higher education.

Eligible academic and research faculty are invited to apply for the 2025-2026 cohort of the Emerging Leaders Program (ELP).

The ELP prepares faculty for academic and research leadership roles across campus. Fostering and mentoring the qualities of strong leadership is at the core of Georgia Tech’s mission to develop leaders who advance technology and improve the human condition. Institute leadership looks forward to another cycle of this impactful program.

"The Emerging Leaders Program exemplifies Georgia Tech's commitment to nurturing talent and preparing our faculty for impactful leadership roles,” said Steve McLaughlin, provost and executive vice president for academic affairs. “By equipping participants with the skills and perspectives needed to lead the Institute, the program strengthens our community."

About the ELP

The Office of the Provost and the Office of the Executive Vice President for Research partner with the Institute for Leadership and Social Impact and the Office of the Vice Provost for Faculty to host the Emerging Leaders Program.

The ninth ELP cohort will conclude in April, and applications are now open for the 10th cohort, which will take place during the 2025-2026 academic year.

The program will begin in the fall semester and continue throughout the academic year. Participants will take part in leadership-focused activities, including a full-day off-site workshop, monthly workshops, small-group work, and coaching. Approximately 16 individuals will be selected for this cohort.

Eligibility for the program includes faculty with the following ranks:

Associate or full professor

Senior or principal research engineer, scientist, associate, technologist, or extension professional

Senior or principal lecturer

Senior or principal academic professional

Librarian or archivist III or IV

Reta Pikowsky and Jeremy Gray have been named to interim appointments in Enrollment Management and the Office of the Registrar, effective March 1.

Pikowsky has been appointed interim vice provost for Enrollment Management. She currently serves as associate vice provost and registrar and has two decades of experience in administrative service to Georgia Tech.

“During her many years of service to Tech, Reta has built immense trust within our administrative and faculty communities,” said Steve McLaughlin, provost and executive vice president for Academic Affairs. “Her superior work and collaborative approach have had a huge, positive impact on nearly every aspect of our campus. Reta’s vast institutional knowledge will enable her to step into this interim role and oversee Enrollment Management services with ease.”

In her interim role, Pikowsky will supervise an office and programs comprising Undergraduate Admission, Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid, the Registrar’s Office, the Office of Scholar Programs, Enrollment Marketing and Communications, Student Success Center and Enrollment Management Administration. These offices collectively assist Georgia Tech students in realizing their educational goals and are crucial to the operational success of the Institute.

Gray will serve as interim registrar for the Office of the Registrar. The current senior associate registrar, Gray is a key contributor to the efficacy of the services provided by Enrollment Management. While Pikowsky steps into the role of interim vice provost, Gray will serve in Pikowsky’s current role. His expertise in student academic record management paired with his commitment to delivering top-tier customer service will help maintain excellence and continuity during this transitional period for the Office of the Registrar.

“We are confident that Reta and Jeremy will excel in their interim roles, ensuring a smooth transition while advancing our mission,” said Steve McLaughlin, provost and executive vice president for Academic Affairs. “We are grateful to Reta and Jeremy for their willingness to step into these critical positions during this period of transition.”

Georgia Tech will begin the search for the next dean of the Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts. The search committee, chaired by Dean of Libraries Leslie Sharp, was chosen through a nomination process and includes a mix of faculty, staff, students, and alumni from within the college, as well as other units from across campus.

Four faculty members have been selected for the second cohort of the Faculty Executive Leadership Academy (FELA) program, which is designed to identify and develop senior faculty members for leadership. The new cohort includes:

Martha Grover, Professor and Associate Chair for Graduate Studies, School of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, and ADVANCE Professor in the College of Engineering
Javier Irizarry, Interim Chair, Professor, and Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Outreach, School of Building Construction, College of Design
Aaron Levine, Professor, School of Public Policy, and Associate Dean for Research and Outreach, Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts

This program will build on the Fellows’ previous leadership experiences by providing access to senior leadership and their decisions; creating opportunities for them to interact with academic leaders from across the nation; offering close, and accessible mentoring with a cohort learning model; and participating in the formulation of project-based solutions and policies related to real problems and ongoing issues. FELA is led by former provost and executive vice president for Academic Affairs Rafael Bras.

“More than ever before, the health and future of higher education depends on good, experienced leaders with a broad understanding of many issues,” said Bras. “FELA is designed as an immersive program to develop that experience and understanding. Georgia Tech is investing in its future by developing the leadership talents of its senior faculty.”

This cohort of FELA Fellows will serve a two-year term beginning in July 2024. During their FELA experience, Fellows will rotate every six months into one of the four Executive Leadership Team offices – the Office of the President, Office of the Provost, Office of the Vice President for Research, and Office of the Vice President for Administration and Finance. In addition to shadowing and project work during these rotations, Fellows will participate in regular cohort meetings with Bras for leadership guest speakers, case studies, and role play activities to further ground their experience.

“Georgia Tech fosters the careers of thousands of the brightest faculty minds in higher education,” said Steve McLaughlin, provost and executive vice president for Academic Affairs. “These four new members of our Faculty Executive Leadership Academy represent those who wish to step forward as future leaders and learn what it takes to support the work of a university on an executive level. Faculty members Chad F. Slieper and Kate Williams, have been named co-directors of Georgia Tech’s next Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP).

As co-directors, both Slieper and Williams will report to Roberta Berry, associate vice provost for Undergraduate Education in the Office of Undergraduate Education and will contribute to the development and planning for Georgia Tech’s next QEP, Leadership in Progress and Service: Creating Intentional and Transformative Learning Experiences. The topic was chosen in the spring by a provost-appointed committee to advance the Transformative Teaching and Learning Initiative of the Institute strategic plan. As co-directors, Slieper and Williams will contribute significantly to writing Georgia Tech’s QEP for submission to the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) in Fall 2024. SACSCOC approval of the QEP is an essential component of the Institute’s reaffirmation of accreditation.

“At the heart of the new QEP is the creation and implementation of transformative learning experiences that prepare Georgia Tech students for leadership roles,” said Laurence Jacobs, senior vice provost for Education and Learning and search committee co-chair. “During our search, we found that Kate and Chad possess complementary knowledge and experiences for an exciting co-directorship. We thank our search committee for their efforts and believe Chad and Kate’s combined talents, working closely with our QEP Development and Planning Committee and other campus stakeholders, will bring our next QEP successfully to life.”

Slieper brings years of experience and Since 2019, he’s served as director of the Law, Science, and Technology program in the Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts and is an academic professional in Georgia Tech’s School of Public Policy. He has won several teaching awards at Georgia Tech. He also serves as the School of Public Policy's faculty liaison to Georgia Tech's LGBTQIA Resource Center. He previously held faculty leadership positions at The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. Slieper holds a J.D. from Emory University School of Law, and a bachelor’s degree in public policy, with highest honors, from Georgia Tech.

“I genuinely believe in what we can accomplish with this Quality Enhancement Plan,” said Slieper. “As an alumnus of Georgia Tech, I have always found our motto of Progress and Service to perfectly encapsulate the spirit of what we do at Georgia Tech. I am also eager to put my own background and experience to use in service of this process.”

A member of the Center for Teaching and Learning faculty since 2015, Williams has more than 25 years of higher education experience in both faculty and leadership roles. As the current interim director of Transformative Teaching and Learning Faculty Initiatives, Williams designed a faculty cohort model to award teaching innovation grants to help faculty integrate experiential learning into their courses. In addition to prior experience as a psychology instructor and department chair, Williams brings expertise in experiential learning, career services, and program assessment. She earned a Ph.D. in industrial-organizational psychology from Clemson University and an M.Ed. in student affairs from the University of South Carolina.

“My vision is to integrate experiential learning within our traditional undergraduate classroom experience for all students to have access to transformative learning experiences,” said Williams. “I am really excited about the opportunity to collaborate on leading the Institute’s efforts to positively impact the undergraduate experience.”

Slieper and Williams will assume the co-director roles, which are year-round 75% appointments, effective Jan. 1. They will also retain their respective appointments within the School of Public Policy and the Center for Teaching and Learning. Planning for the new QEP will take place over the next year. 

“We are creating an initiative that will focus on high-impact practices that enhance student success as well as the development of future leaders,” said Steven P. Girardot, vice provost for Undergraduate Education and search committee co-chair. “Successful development and planning of the QEP will require faculty directors who can reach a broad network of students, faculty, and staff across campus. We feel Chad and Kate have the knowledge and experience to accomplish that, and I am excited to work with them in their new roles.”

Provost Steve McLaughlin has named Karie Davis-Nozemack as executive chief of staff and associate provost for the Office of the Provost, effective Jan. 1.

A member of the Georgia Tech faculty since 2011, Davis-Nozemack currently serves as interim associate dean for academic programs and associate professor of business law and ethics in the Scheller College of Business. As interim associate dean, she oversees the Scheller undergraduate, Full-Time MBA, Evening MBA, Executive MBA, and other interdisciplinary programs.

In the new role, Davis-Nozemack will promote and advise the Office of the Provost on administrative and institutional matters and develop actions plans on policies and procedures, operational effectiveness, and communications on issues that advance the Institute’s priorities, goals, and outcomes set forth in the Institute strategic plan. She will serve as a key campus collaborator on executive initiatives and as a liaison and representative on campus committees and provide strategic oversight to the provost’s staff.

“Karie’s time at Tech has proven her to be an effective leader, scholar, educator, and advocate for faculty, staff, and students,” said McLaughlin. “Her background and strategic leadership through the years on a range of issues important to our community give me great confidence and I look forward to working with her in this new role.”

Since 2021, Davis-Nozemack has led Georgia Tech’s faculty governance as Faculty Executive Board chair, collaborating with fifteen standing committees and serving as a faculty representative on several Institute committees. Notably, she played a key role in advocating for faculty in the adoption of recent University System of Georgia (USG) policy changes related to evaluation and post-tenure review, serving as a convener across USG institutions and helping to build local consensus among Georgia Tech faculty in implementing the new policies. She also co-led revisions to the academic freedom and academic program review sections of the faculty handbook.

“Serving our brilliant colleagues and students has been the most fulfilling work of my career,“ said Davis-Nozemack. “This new role is an opportunity to continue and advance that work.”

Davis-Nozemack’s time at Tech has also seen her lauded for her self-professed love of teaching. She has received numerous awards and recognitions, including the Brady Family Award for Teaching Excellence, the Center for Teaching and Learning Curriculum Innovation Award, and Graduate Student Government Association’s Faculty of the Year. She is also a two-time Scheller Professor of the Year honoree and a ten-time Course Survey Teaching Effectiveness Award winner. Her research focuses on legal and ethical mechanisms for constraining opportunistic managerial behavior, including tax whistleblowers, tax compliance strategies, and fiduciary duty.

Davis-Nozemack holds a Bachelor of Arts in political science and history from Emory University, a Juris Doctor from Washington and Lee University, and a Master of Taxation from Georgia State University.

The eighth cohort of Georgia Tech’s Emerging Leaders Program has been selected. Starting in December 2023 and continuing through Spring 2024, participants will take part in several leadership development activities, including a kick-off retreat, regular workshops and small group work during the Spring, and leadership coaching. This is the first year the program has been open to senior and principal non-tenure track faculty and research faculty.

Georgia Tech has selected the topic of its next Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP), a critical piece of the Institute’s reaffirmation of accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC). After consideration of potential topics, the QEP committee has selected “Leadership in Progress and Service: Creating Intentional and Transformative Learning Experiences.” Planning around the new topic will take place over the next year.

Reaffirmation is the process by which Georgia Tech must prove to a review team from peer institutions that the Institute is qualified to continue to award academic credit. The QEP should address key issues identified in our ongoing assessment process and should also support student learning. The selection committee, co-chaired by Laurence Jacobs, senior vice provost for Education and Learning, and Steven Girardot, vice provost for Undergraduate Education, reviewed 47 possible topics and found the focus of the chosen topic to be best aligned with the Institute’s current Strategic Plan and the Transformative Teaching and Learning (TTL) Strategic Initiative.

The heart of the topic is the creation and implementation of transformative learning experiences that prepare Georgia Tech students for leadership roles. An important aspect will also be a focus on students who may be less likely to participate in existing high impact practices: under-resourced, income-limited, and first-generation students.

“Georgia Tech is known for developing leaders,” said Steve McLaughlin, provost and executive vice president for Academic Affairs. “The leaders of the future arrive on our campus with a wide range of academic and life circumstances, which means that a singular, one-size-fits-all college experience isn’t best to ensure student success. We want all Georgia Tech students to have the resources they need to become the leaders we know they can be, and the topic selected for our next QEP is intended to do exactly that.”

The next step of QEP development will involve outlining a course of action that includes the creation of a timeline and budget for implementation. This work will be operationally based within the Office of Undergraduate Education (OUE)and will be executed in collaboration with the Office of Academic Effectiveness, as well as faculty, staff, and students from across campus.

The Institute’s reaffirmation of SACSCOC accreditation will take place in 2025, so the QEP design process will occur throughout the next year and will include opportunities for campus engagement from faculty and staff; the establishment of a design and planning committee; and hiring of a QEP faculty director. Updates on the process and ways to become involved will be made available on the Provost’s Quality Enhancement Plan webpage.

“An incredible amount of work goes into the QEP topic selection, design, and implementation process,” said McLaughlin. “We are deeply appreciative of the ideas shared by our campus topic contributors, as well as the thoughtful work of the co-chairs and selection committee. Reaccreditation is no small task, but support from Georgia Tech faculty, staff, and students will help us bring the QEP topic to life in a meaningful way.”
