                        &lt;div&gt;&lt;h3&gt;Collaboration between Norfolk Southern Corporation and the Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI) has led to the development of digital train inspection portals that use advanced machine vision and artificial intelligence to examine trains moving at speeds of up to 60 miles per hour to identify mechanical defects that may exist.&lt;/h3&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Machine vision technology in the portals produces images of key components located on the front and back, top, bottom, and sides of train cars, providing a 360-degree view of the complete train. Images produced by the portal are analyzed within minutes of a train’s passage, allowing any issues identified to be reported immediately.&lt;/p&gt;





&lt;p&gt;Two train portals are currently in operation on adjacent tracks in Leetonia, Ohio, and the company plans to have as many as a dozen in service by the end of 2024. Among them will be a train portal already under construction near Jackson, Georgia, which is located south of Atlanta.&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;“Norfolk Southern is deploying Digital Train Inspection Portals to enhance rail safety across the company’s 22-state network,” said Mabby Amouie, chief data scientist for the company. “The portals feature cutting-edge machine vision inspection technology developed in partnership with GTRI, which engineered the hardware, and Norfolk Southern’s Data Science/Artificial Intelligence and Mechanical teams, which built the brains behind the program.”&lt;/p&gt;





&lt;p&gt;The machine vision portion uses 38 high-resolution cameras consisting of a mix of area and line scan cameras to photograph critical components of each rail car moving through the portals. Powerful lights comparable to those used in sports stadiums allow the cameras to take approximately a thousand photographs of each moving rail car.&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;“Being able to look at the train while it’s moving at 60 miles per hour provides visibility into defects that would be difficult to see otherwise,” said Gary McMurray, division chief of GTRI’s Intelligent Sustainable Technologies Division. “You want to be able to look at a train while it’s in motion because that’s when components are stressed, and you can see other dynamic faults.”&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;To reduce the amount of data that must be analyzed, each camera is aimed at a specific area of the train and takes photographs only when components of interest are visible. “The high-speed cameras are strategically placed at angles to capture things that are difficult to detect with the human eye during stationary inspections,” said Amouie.&lt;/p&gt;





&lt;p&gt;Sensors at each portal determine the speed of each train passing through and use that information to precisely control when the photographs are taken.&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;“Even with a train traveling 60 miles per hour, we are able to calculate in real time when to tell each camera to take a picture,” said Colin Usher, a GTRI senior research scientist who led development of the machine vision system. “Only images of critical components are taken and the other areas of the train that are inconsequential to identifying defects are not captured. That optimizes the image capture and saves space in the computer system.”&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;The images produced by the system are analyzed by artificial intelligence algorithms developed by Norfolk Southern. The algorithms were designed to provide a combination of high accuracy and very low rates of false positives. If defects are spotted, the AI systems reports them immediately.&lt;/p&gt;





&lt;p&gt;“The computer transmits the information to Norfolk Southern’s Network Operations Center, where the data is reviewed by subject-matter experts to identify and address issues to proactively ensure the safety of rail operations,” Amouie said. “Critical defects are flagged for immediate handling.”&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;The machine vision system uses image compression techniques to reduce the size of the photographs processed by computer servers located in the portals. For a single train, the data analyzed can amount to as much as 500 gigabytes. Because the inspection needs to be done quickly, the image processing is done on-site.&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;The inspection portals must operate year-round in all kinds of weather conditions and in geographic locations that range from extreme heat to cold. The machine vision system therefore has to operate despite heavy vibration levels, temperature extremes, rain and snow – and to remain clean as trains pass over.&lt;/p&gt;





&lt;p&gt;To protect the cameras, air blown over the camera lenses shields them, while air-conditioned enclosures prevent overheating of the equipment. The system operates in a tunnel structure that helps protect the equipment and control lighting, which must be consistent across the train being inspected.&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;The project, which began in 2021, involved approximately a dozen researchers in four GTRI laboratories. The research built on imaging work done earlier for a variety of applications, including the food processing industry, which needed to monitor poultry on moving processing lines.&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;“By partnering with GTRI, Norfolk Southern is tapping into the best in machine vision technology in any market,” Amouie said. “We chose GTRI to be a partner because they develop advanced technology solutions and large-scale system prototypes to address the most difficult problems in national security, economic development and the overall human condition.”&lt;/p&gt;

  <title>$2.3B Qcells Solar Power Investment Holds Major Potential for Georgia</title>

                        &lt;div&gt;&lt;p&gt;The state of Georgia is at the epicenter of what may be the largest investment in clean energy manufacturing in U.S. history, and Georgia Tech is poised to play a key role in an investment that is slated to create thousands of jobs and boost solar power infrastructure in our state and beyond.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Qcells, a solar power company, plans to build a $2.3 billion manufacturing complex just north of Atlanta in Cartersville to not only make state-of-the-art components for solar panels, but also to build complete panels used in a variety of settings, from houses to large-scale commercial and industrial solar arrays.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Georgia Tech is home to some of the world’s leading researchers and experts in photovoltaic materials and solar energy. Juan-Pablo Correa-Baena, assistant professor and Goizueta Junior Faculty Rotating Chair in the School of Materials Science and Engineering, and his research group have been blazing trails on the hunt for new materials that can be used in solar energy conversion.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;“The most important part of this investment in U.S. manufacturing is the fact that Qcells is investing in the development of ingot and wafer production,” Correa-Baena said. Currently, silicon needs to be processed to form solar cells used to harvest energy. Ingots are the first step in the manufacturing process of refining raw materials into wafers. The wafers become the base for completed solar panels.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Over the past decade, most ingot and wafer production has been happening outside of the U.S. “With this investment, we guarantee that we can have full control of the supply chain by manufacturing all aspects of the solar panels domestically,” said Correa-Baena. Ultimately, the goal is to make solar energy more affordable for American consumers and create high-paying jobs for Georgians.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;“It is exciting to see that silicon manufacturing is restarting in the U.S. and that Georgia is at the forefront of it,” said Ajeet Rohatgi, Regents’ Professor and John H. Weitnauer Jr. Chair in the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Rohatgi is one of the world’s leading researchers in photovoltaics –&amp;nbsp;the conversion of light into electricity using semiconducting materials like silicon. He is the founding director of the first university-based and Department of Energy-funded &lt;a href="http://www.ece.gatech.edu/research/UCEP"&gt;Center of Excellence for Photovoltaics Research and Education&lt;/a&gt;. The center’s work focuses on finding and improving the materials used to make solar cells while also improving their efficiency.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Qcells built its first plant near Dalton, Georgia, in 2019. By 2022, the facility had become the largest producer of solar panels in the western hemisphere. Rohatgi says representatives from Qcells have visited his research facilities on campus, and he and his team have visited the company’s Dalton facility as well.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;“As demand for clean energy continues to grow nationally, we’re ready to put thousands of people to work creating fully American made and sustainable solar solutions, from raw material to finished panels,” said Justin Lee, CEO of Qcells. “We are committed to working with our customers as well as national and Georgia leaders to bring completely clean energy to millions of people across the country.”&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Tim Lieuwen, executive director of the &lt;a href="http://energy.gatech.edu/"&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Strategic Energy Institute&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;strong&gt;, &lt;/strong&gt;Regents' Professor, and David S. Lewis Jr. Chair said, “Georgia Tech is a key leader in most of the core technologies associated with clean energy industries, has nationally distinctive researchers and facilities, and educates a lot of undergraduate and graduate students in these areas.”&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;That is why Tech has the potential to be a valuable partner in this project. “We are in a unique space where we can interface with Qcells to help them improve materials processing and explore new materials, but also aid in their manufacturing processes by introducing artificial intelligence to optimize processes and increase their productivity,” said Correa-Baena.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;The announcement is not just significant for Georgia Tech, but for the state of Georgia as well. In Lieuwen’s view, Georgia is emerging as a center of clean energy manufacturing and technology, in no small part thanks to the Institute’s partnerships, research, and workforce development efforts. He says advancements in electric vehicles, batteries, and hydrogen power are all picking up steam in our state. “Having these types of companies in areas where Georgia Tech is focusing research and development efforts is good for the Institute and the state.”&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;The Qcells expansion is likely just the tip of the iceberg, as leading researchers from across campus identify projects like these where Tech ingenuity and innovation can make a difference.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;“I’m enthusiastic about this expansion of solar cell manufacturing in Georgia because it builds on other clean energy, electrification, and energy storage industries already existing or planned for our state,” said Julia Kubanek, professor and vice president for Interdisciplinary Research. “The Southeast is increasingly becoming known as a hub for cleantech innovation, and Georgia Tech is proud to be a key contributor to this ecosystem.”&lt;/p&gt;

  <title>A break in the baby formula supply chain</title>

                        &lt;div&gt;&lt;p&gt;A national shortage has parents and families across the country struggling to feed newborns as store shelves have been left bare of baby formula products – including many brands critical to young children with specific vulnerabilities. Retailers are having to ration their supplies, some parents have resorted to shipping in formula from overseas, and social media sites have been used to crowdsource goods to be shipped to parents nervous about where their children’s next meal might come from.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Georgia Tech economics expert Tibor Besedes says it has been a perfect storm of issues to create this stress-inducing situation.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;“Like many other industries, the formula producers have faced supply chain issues with respect to ingredients and containers. Waves of Covid-19 infections have affected their workforce and how much formula they can produce,” explained Besedes.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;The final straw that may have led to this nationwide shortage: an Abbott production shutdown in February 2022 after several babies were sickened and two died from bacterial infections connected to consuming baby formula from the Sturgis, Michigan facility. A recall followed, and that facility is believed to make at least 20% of all formula bought by consumers nationwide.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;“It is one of a few plants in the U.S. producing formula,” said Besedes. “That fact itself is a bottleneck as those few plants operating in the U.S. produce 98% of all formula sold in the U.S.”&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;“The formula market has been highly concentrated for a long time,” explained Lindsay Rose Bullinger, Georgia Tech assistant professor of public policy. “Now we’re dealing with a crisis and it’s hard to be proactive.”&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;The overwhelming majority of those formula products are only made by four different companies, explains Wendy White, a nationally known food safety expert.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;“Because infant formula is the sole source of nutrition and targeted at such a vulnerable population, it has extra regulations in the Infant Formula Act of 1980,” explains White.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;This includes mandatory registration for any infant formula manufacturers and requirements for all formulation, processing details, and ingredient lists to be filed with the FDA.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;The regulations are critical, according to Bullinger.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;“We’re trying to make a product comparable to breast milk. Newborn children can’t digest many of the proteins in cow’s milk,” she explained.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Formula is developed by scientists in highly regulated environments for infants that are incredibly susceptible to sickness as their immune and digestive systems have just begun adapting to nourishment outside of the womb.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Diluted or homemade options do not provide the right balance of nutrients that infants need at the most critical time of their lives. Manufactured formulas are made in highly sterile environments to avoid harmful additions from getting into these mixtures.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;“It’s incredibly hard to get that right in a home environment without introducing bacteria,” Bullinger said.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Those strict regulations also mean that possible scenarios to help alleviate this formula shortage have been complicated. Just shipping some in from another country? Not so fast.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;“Foreign manufacturers need to obtain FDA approvals to begin exporting to the U.S. to make up the shortage,” said Besedes. “The FDA is now looking at manufacturers based in countries with similar regulations to expedite their approvals and increase shipments to the U.S.”&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;The first relief came from overseas within the past week – a shipment of about 70,000 pounds of formula. More foreign shipments are expected in the coming days, but the supply may only last for about a week as issues continue to compound.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;“Once there was a recall and parents heard, they started stockpiling formula,” said White. The result is taking already short supplies and stretching them even thinner.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;“The supply chain has to also deal with the unneeded bullwhip effect due to shortage gaming and hoarding behavior, making the situation even worse than what it should be,” says Operations Management Associate Professor Morvarid Rahmani.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;White also says that 50% of the infant formula in America is purchased through government subsidies.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;States who provide this assistance often sign exclusive contracts with one of these four formula manufacturers. Abbott carries the contract in nearly two-thirds of U.S. states – complicating the purchases for families with infants in those locations.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;“Families in communities that are economically disenfranchised may be disproportionately affected,” explained Bullinger. “But even if you have the money, if you cannot buy formula how else are you supposed to feed an infant.”&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Families who rely on Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, also commonly known as food stamps) or Supplemental Nutrition for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) may not be able to choose which brand of formula they can receive. They can only get the formula their state has a contract with. If it is out, they may just be out of luck.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Some of the most hard-to-find infant formulas are the specialized products developed for newborns with milk allergies or other digestive issues. There’s a special emphasis on sourcing those products for parents in need.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;So how much longer could this shortage impact American consumers? At least a few weeks, Georgia Tech’s experts say.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;“Abbott is estimating that it’ll take about two weeks to get production to resume but another 6-8 weeks to get formula back on supermarket shelves,” says White.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;That means the closed facility should be open in late May with production back up to full speed sometime in August. Limited diversity in the market has left parents in a bind.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;“A shortage could be alleviated by increasing output of other plants and manufacturers, which is being done, but it is difficult to replace an entire plant,” explained Besedes.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;“Ramping up production has been difficult because of shortages in labor and ingredients as well as production scheduling challenges,” explained Rahmani.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Some desperate parents have had to resort to extreme measures. But pediatricians have said infants should only be fed formula or breast milk. Anything else is likely deficient. Using alternative feeding methods could lead to long-term problems.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;“There is a risk that a shortage will mean babies will not be getting the nutrition they need to develop. That could lead to a range of health problems affecting their physical growth and brain development,” explained Senior Research Engineer Maureen Linden from Georgia Tech’s Center for Inclusive Design and Innovation.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;“Consumers should listen to their pediatricians and other experts and follow their advice. Pediatricians may have available samples they can give out,” said Besedes.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;They can also offer advice for alternative baby formula (to the one in shortage) which is available. Medical experts are strongly advising against diluting formula or trying to recreate it at home which could cause long-lasting damage.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;“We may see a rise in the rate of developmental disabilities in the age group that is presently reliant on formula – those presently six months or less,” says Linden.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Nutrition is the most important thing in an infant’s life. It’s the number one priority – making sure we are feeding them and they are developing,” explained Bullinger.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;That’s why infants often get so many checkups – to make sure they are growing and gaining weight. Proper nutrition is critical for that to happen.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;In the meantime, consumers can take their own action. White says it’s worth trying to buy online or shopping around at different stores.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;The federal government has relaxed regulations for SNAP and WIC recipients to be able to get products with increased flexibility.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;The White House has also invoked the Defense Production Act which is aimed to help manufacturers ramp up output quickly.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;“Those companies will have first dibs at materials and ingredients that are needed to make formula,” said Bullinger.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;“This shortage should be temporary, as demand settles, and supply is replenished from the reopened Abbott plant and FDA-approved imports,” says White.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Regardless, Georgia Tech experts have said we should have seen this coming and could have been better prepared and quicker to act –&amp;nbsp;particularly for the sake of the youngest among us.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;“The FDA, Biden’s administration, and baby formula manufacturers have been slow in taking actions during the past few months to prevent that. This crisis could have been prevented by timely actions,” said Rahmani.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;“Infants always get the short end of the stick. They can’t speak for themselves,” said Bullinger.&lt;/p&gt;

                        &lt;div&gt;&lt;p&gt;Two Georgia Tech alumnae made a big splash on a global stage last night.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Raianna Brown and Makeda Cyrus danced alongside Beyoncé in a performance that opened the Oscars.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Brown was lined up right next to the pop music icon in the opening sequence. Cyrus was also one of the dozens of dancers wearing tennis ball-green costumes. Beyoncé was performing her Oscar-nominated original song Be Alive from the movie soundtrack of King Richard, a biography of Richard Williams, father of Grand Slam tennis champions Venus and Serena Williams.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;"I'm just so grateful," Brown posted on her Instagram account referring to being part of the performance. Speaking of Instagram, Raianna is standing just to the left of Beyoncé in the artist's official post of the performance–an Instagram photo that has received more than 3 million likes.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;It isn't the first time Brown has danced on a national stage though. In 2020, she danced alongside &lt;a href="https://news.gatech.edu/news/2020/02/10/georgia-tech-engineering-grad-dances-super-bowl-liv-halftime-show"&gt;Shakira and Jennifer Lopez in the Super Bowl LIV halftime show&lt;/a&gt;.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;But she says this is her first performance in Los Angeles and her first chance to dance at an awards show. Brown earned her degree from Georgia Tech in industrial engineering and has continued working as the lead software developer for consulting firm CMB Global Partners — while advancing her dancing career as well.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Cyrus, also prominently part of the elaborate choreography sequence that kicked off the Oscars, was a dancer at Georgia Tech, too, as well as Ms. Georgia Tech in 2010. She earned her degree in civil engineering. After working in the corporate world for several years, she pivoted to become a professional dancer and has performed with Mandy Moore, LL Cool J, and Pharrell Williams, and has been seen on Netflix, NBC's The Voice, and the American Music Awards. Like Brown, Cyrus has also performed at the Super Bowl halftime show; she did it this year with Mary J. Blige.&lt;/p&gt;

                        &lt;div&gt;&lt;p&gt;Using 70 years of tornado damage data, two Georgia Tech students have developed a proprietary model to help homeowners access financial support immediately following the devastation of a tornado.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Mechanical engineering students Brayden Drury and Wesley Pergament have used those seven decades of information provided by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the National Weather Service to come up with technology that can calculate the likelihood for future disasters and what payouts may be necessary.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;“Essentially, it’s like our company has been around for 70 years,” explained Drury.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Because of limits and exclusions in insurance coverage, homeowners often have to pay out of pocket in the immediate aftermath of a natural disaster. Team Sola hopes their model for a data-driven supplemental insurance plan with quick payouts will change that, benefiting homeowners as soon as they need it — while also benefiting home insurance providers.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;With their $20,000 check for winning the InVenture competition, Team Sola hopes to start partnering with some of America’s major insurance companies. Drury and Pergament say it will also allow for them to pull in developers to continue to enhance their modeling software.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;The judges noted Team Sola’s evident passion.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;“How does one get passion for insurance?” asked InVenture Prize judge Kolby Hanley, 2017 InVenture Prize winner and CEO of UltraView Archery.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;“These industries are so fascinating to look at, but they can be riddled with problems,” responded Pergament. “We’re just passionate about solving a big problem that hasn’t been solved yet.”&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;In addition to the cash prize, Team Sola will receive a free U.S. patent filing from Georgia Tech’s Office of Technology Licensing and a spot in &lt;a href="https://create-x.gatech.edu/"&gt;CREATE-X&lt;/a&gt;, Georgia Tech’s startup incubator.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Second place and $10,000 went to Team Foambuster,&amp;nbsp;a team of mechanical engineers that has developed a handheld tool to minimize the snow-like debris created by installing external insulation finishing systems.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;And for the People’s Choice Award, the viewing audience used text and web platforms to submit their votes. That $5,000 prize went to Team Reflex, which is currently testing an emergency medical drone response system to deliver lifesaving medical equipment.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;“There were so many amazing pitches, and these students are so amazing,” said InVenture Prize judge Duriya Farooqui, board director of Intercontinental Hotels Group and Intercontinental Exchange.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Hanley also expressed how impressed he was by all the finalists, noting, “All of these teams are going to be successful.” &amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;
