Georgia Tech Tops Princeton Review’s Best Value List

admin

Wed, 06/25/2025 - 08:45

For the third consecutive year, Georgia Tech has been named the best value public college by The Princeton Review.

The Institute earned the top spot in the public school rankings, based on 40 metrics that measure academics, affordability, and career outcomes, as well as survey data from administrators at over 650 schools.

Additionally, Tech ranked No. 1 for career placement.

The publication also surveys students, who praised Georgia Tech’s innovative and hands-on learning approach, which “leaves them well prepared to face the job market” after graduation. A similar opinion was shared by nearly 400 C-suite executives, whose feedback helped land Tech on the 2025 Forbes New Ivies list.

The Princeton Review’s rankings further showcase Georgia Tech’s strong return on investment. According to the most recent data from the Department of Education’s College Scorecard, the Institute ranks first among public universities when measuring ROI 15, 20, and 30 years after graduation.

Tech has maintained its position as a top-value school even in the midst of record levels of growth. In April, full-time enrollment reached 42,872, a 24.6% increase from the previous year, while total enrollment has surpassed 50,000.

Georgia Tech FY26 Budget Focuses on Growth, Fiscal Discipline

Georgia Tech FY26 Budget Focuses on Growth, Fiscal Discipline

admin

Thu, 07/31/2025 - 14:08

This spring, the University System of Georgia (USG) Board of Regents (BOR) approved $51.3 million in new state appropriations for Georgia Tech’s fiscal year 2026 budget. This 10% increase from last year’s state appropriations is primarily driven by enrollment growth funding. In addition, the BOR approved a systemwide 2% out-of-state tuition increase and a 3% tuition increase for out-of-country students for the upcoming fiscal year. For Georgia Tech, in-state tuition rates will remain steady for FY26, ensuring continued affordability for Georgia residents.

“We are thankful to the Board of Regents and the state of Georgia for their support of higher education and Georgia Tech,” said Tricia Chastain, executive vice president for Administration and Finance (A&F). “While this funding positions us to continue advancing our mission, we are entering FY26 with a fiscally cautious mindset given the uncertainties at the federal level and how those may affect our funding — especially our research enterprise.”

In total, Georgia Tech is projecting $57.2 million in new allocable funding on account of increases in state appropriations, undergraduate enrollment, and tuition. Due to the need to reserve funds to safeguard against unexpected shortfalls in revenue, the Institute’s executive leadership team has made the challenging but necessary decision to centrally reserve a significant portion of this new revenue to allow for adaptive financial planning throughout the year. In alignment with Tech’s commitment to student success and institutional priorities, limited funding was released to support strategic growth, with a focus on instruction and infrastructure.

The Institute has allocated $2.1million to support a limited merit pay program being implemented systemwide by the USG for the September payroll. This program is designed to recognize many high-performing faculty and staff, with eligibility limited to 15% of employees and pay increases of no more than 4%. Unit leaders will notify eligible recipients this month. More information is available on the Georgia Tech Human Resources website.

Looking ahead, the campus community is invited to attend A&F Connects (formerly known as A&F Town Hall) on Tuesday, Aug. 19, from 2 to 3 p.m., to learn more about Georgia Tech’s FY26 budget, federal funding sensitivities, and the USG’s Merit Pay Program. This will be a hybrid event, and more information will be shared closer to the date.

Environmental Health and Safety Earns National Awards

Wed, 07/30/2025 - 12:39

The Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Department at Georgia Tech develops programs and provides oversight, consultation, training, and other specialized services to assist the Tech community in meeting its public health, occupational and research safety, environmental protection, and compliance responsibilities. Housed within the Infrastructure and Sustainability unit, EHS consists of more than 30 dedicated professionals focused on ensuring safety across various domains, including biological, environmental, fire, general campus, hazardous waste, laboratory and chemical, and radiation safety.

The department was recently recognized nationally by the Campus Safety, Health, and Environmental Management Association (CSHEMA) with four Institutional Awards for 2025, marking the second consecutive year the department has received top honors. This year’s awards highlight innovative programs in makerspace safety, chemical inventory reconciliation, team-based safety culture, and respiratory protection tailored to lab environments.

In total, Georgia Tech EHS has now received seven CSHEMA awards in two years, showcasing the team’s commitment to building a proactive, collaborative safety culture through strategic communication, innovation, and continuous improvement.

EHS Associate Vice President Jerel Harris said, “We’re proud to receive these recognitions from CSHEMA for the second year in a row. While the EHS team has worked hard to develop tools, resources, and programs that support a proactive safety culture, these achievements are only possible because of the strong commitment from our campus partners. Ultimately, safety compliance is their responsibility, and we’re grateful for the collaboration that makes Georgia Tech a leader in this space.”

Georgia Tech EHS received the following awards:

Comprehensive EHS Marketing and Communications Program Award for The Makers’ Protection Initiative

Marketing Campaign Award for The Chemical Reconciliation Campaign

Innovation Award for Safety Culture for The General Safety Team Initiatives

Innovation Award for Process Improvement for the Respiratory Protection Program and The Makers’ Protection Program

Apple Accounts Using Georgia Tech Email Addresses to Become Institute-Managed Accounts

Apple Accounts Using Georgia Tech Email Addresses to Become Institute-Managed Accounts

admin

Tue, 07/29/2025 - 16:06

Beginning Aug. 4, students, faculty, staff, and alumni using an "@gatech.edu" email address with their Apple Account will need to make a switch to a non-Georgia Tech email address. This applies to those with personal Apple Accounts on personal devices and on Georgia Tech-managed iOS devices, such as a MacBook or iPhone. Personal accounts that continue to use a Georgia Tech-domain email address will become Institute-managed Apple Accounts.

Apple’s evolving enterprise capabilities, which include auto-enrollment of devices and improved application delivery through mobile device management, have heightened the need for distinct institutional and personal user accounts. Institute-managed Apple Accounts will allow Georgia Tech to provide improved security, data separation, and unified device management.

“This update helps create a boundary between personal and professional Apple data and devices,” said Derek McKenzie, IT architect with the Office of Information Technology (OIT). “Through Institute-managed Apple Accounts, we can enable Single Sign-On, simplify access to licensed apps and services, and ensure that Georgia Tech-issued Apple devices are properly managed by the Institute.”

Affected users will be prompted by Apple to select an alternate email address for their account. Updates to a primary email address for an Apple Account will not affect user data, purchases, or passwords. The email address used to sign in will change, and Georgia Tech will not have access to your data.

How do I update my Apple Account if I currently use a Georgia Tech-domain email address?
These users can update their Apple Account email address to any third-party email address or create an @icloud.com email address. Users who create an @icloud.com email address may be required to wait 30 days before they can use the address with their Apple Account. View these instructions to learn how to change your Apple Account primary email address.

What will happen to my account and personal data if I don’t update my email address?
Users who continue to use a Georgia Tech-domain email address as their primary address for their Apple Account will have their login email address changed to a "temporary.appleid.com" email address. (For example, gburdell3@gatech.edu would change to gburdell3-gatech.edu@temporary.appleid.com.)

How do I confirm whether my Apple Account was created using a Georgia Tech email address?

Open Settings on your Apple device.

Select the username at the top.

If an "@gatech.edu" email address is in use for the Apple Account login, Apple will prompt the user to choose a new email address before the transition.

If your Apple Account does not use a Georgia Tech-domain email address, no action is required.

Summary sentence

Users with an "@gatech.edu" for their personal Apple Accounts are required to update their email to a non-Georgia Tech email address.

The transition to Institute-managed Apple Accounts supports secure access to licensed apps, enables Single Sign-On, and separates personal data from Georgia Tech-issued Apple resources.

Georgia Tech has Historic Fundraising Year

Georgia Tech has Historic Fundraising Year

admin

Tue, 07/29/2025 - 09:09

Georgia Tech has achieved the most successful fundraising year in its history, raising nearly $300 million in philanthropic support in Fiscal Year 2025. This achievement marks a significant milestone for Georgia Tech. More than 25,000 donors contributed to this year’s success — including alumni, foundations, corporations, and first-time supporters.

“Georgia Tech’s brand has never been stronger. People close to campus and those across the nation are seeing Georgia Tech as a problem-solver in a changing world. We simply can’t thank our friends, alumni, volunteers, and staff enough for the great work that’s being done on so many levels,” said Jim Hall, vice president for Development.

This monumental success marks a 20% increase over the Institute’s previous record-setting year and fuels momentum for Transforming Tomorrow: The Campaign for Georgia Tech, the most ambitious philanthropic effort in the Institute’s history, which now totals $1.592 billion and counting. Fiscal Year 2025 places Georgia Tech on pace to achieve its $2 billion campaign goal by the end of 2027. Official fiscal year totals will be finalized in September.

Investing in Students, Innovation, and Impact

“There’s no better investment than Georgia Tech,” said Ángel Cabrera, president of Georgia Tech. “When you support Georgia Tech, you’re investing in an institution that provides students with the best value in higher education and is a pillar of our state’s and our nation’s growth. Lives shaped by Georgia Tech create lasting influence, and we are immensely grateful to our donors and supporters for helping us amplify our impact.”

This record-breaking year reflects major investments in strategic priorities, including:

Invest in the Best Scholarship Matching Challenge – Donors unlocked $100 million in new endowed scholarship support for low- and limited-income students, thanks to a dollar-for-dollar match from the Georgia Tech Foundation. Klaus Startup Challenge Showcases Georgia Tech's Rising Entrepreneurial Talent

dgivens8

Tue, 07/29/2025 - 08:57

Artificial intelligence (AI) technologies played a crucial role for student entrepreneurs competing for $750,000 in startup funding during the fifth annual Klaus Startup Challenge at the College of Computing.

More than 200 students competed during the entry-level pitch competition. Georgia Tech alumnus and renowned tech entrepreneur Christopher W. Klaus, the competition's namesake, pledged $150,000 toward startup costs for five winning teams. The challenge aims to prepare beginner entrepreneurs for future competitions and funding opportunities.

The three-round competition started in February with 87 teams. In round one, teams had to meet the application deadline and ensure that at least one team member participated in all challenge workshops, mentor meetings, and pitch practices. Round two required eligible teams to submit a 90-second pitch video.

Twenty-four teams selected by a judges' panel then moved on to round three of the startup challenge, which took place on April 2 in the Klaus Advanced Computing Building.

For the final round, the teams pitched their startup concepts to a live audience and a panel of judges. The judges were Klaus, Joe Uhl, an alumnus and member of the College of Computing Advisory Board, and Margaret Weniger, director of Entrepreneurial Programs at CREATE-X.

The winning startups span financial services, cybersecurity, social media, and other business sectors.

Targeting the food and beverage industry, winning startup DDingDong has developed an innovative platform that leverages advanced technology and streamlined communication to connect restaurants and diners through personalized promotions.

Seung Taek Lee (CS 25), CS BS/MS student Sunny Park, and business major Seongyeon Cho co-founded DDingDong. The team is using its funding investment from Fusen to establish the startup as a Delaware C Corporation.

“What started as a spark of an idea just three months ago has now grown into a real product, a real team, and a real company. With all those late nights, no weekends, and endless coding — all running on the sheer energy of ‘we believe in this,’” Park said in a LinkedIn post.

Park also thanked the judges in her post. She singled out Klaus. She said, “This challenge carries your name, your legacy, and your continued commitment to pushing innovation forward.

“It was an honor to pitch in front of you, and we’re incredibly grateful that you saw something in us. Your belief in our idea gave us the confidence to keep building.”

The competition rules require each team to have at least one member who is a current Georgia Tech student. In addition to DDingDong, the winning teams of the 2025 Klaus Startup Challenge and their Yellow Jacket team members are:

AerLock: Jack Rumpf, Jack Wachter (CS 24), Yoyi Xie – AerLock brings AI to cybersecurity, creating a single solution to defend entire organizations in real time. It looks to outpace the development of malware, which will help end effective cyberattacks.

Chemetrian: David Ashley (CS MS 25) – Chemetrian empowers molecular scientists to harness AI and machine learning through an intuitive, easy-to-use platform that standardizes computational workflows. This functionality accelerates the discovery of societally transformative molecules, eliminating the need for programming expertise.

Loandock: Ethan Gutierrez and Arnav Jha – Loandock streamlines the mortgage process for homebuyers by consolidating loan officers, underwriters, and processors into one AI-powered platform.

Shelfmates: Khushi Gupta, Krishnav Singhal – Shelfmates creates tailored social media experiences for readers. It provides users with daily book discoveries, personalized recommendations, and tools to journal, rate, and effortlessly share their reading journeys.

The winning teams each received $150,000 to fund their startups. Fusen, a national campus startup accelerator founded by Klaus, provided the investment funding for the competition.

Despite this generosity, funding the College’s student startup challenge isn’t Klaus’s only investment in Georgia Tech student entrepreneurship this year.

Klaus, a member of the College’s Advisory Board, made headlines this month when he announced that he would personally cover the incorporation costs for any graduating student aspiring to launch a startup.

"This is about more than just covering fees — it’s about lighting a spark,” said Klaus during Commencement remarks on May 2.

“Every founder needs someone to believe in them early. Through this gift, we’re offering that belief and giving graduates the chance to start building with purpose and confidence.”

Johnson’s Accolades Reflect Leadership in Action

Johnson’s Accolades Reflect Leadership in Action

admin

Mon, 07/28/2025 - 15:35

Ronald Johnson has held many titles in his career — major general, professor, and vice president, to name a few. Most recently, Georgia Tech's senior vice president of Strategic Initiatives and chief of staff was named the Black Engineer of the Year by U.S. Black Engineer and Information Technology magazine. He was honored at the Black Engineer of the Year STEM Conference in February.

Johnson's career as an engineer began following his graduation from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and includes 32 years of active duty in the U.S. Army, from which he retired in 2008 after attaining the rank of major general while serving as the second-highest-ranking senior engineer staff officer in the U.S. Army. Earlier, General Johnson served as the commanding general of the U.S. Army Installation Management Agency, responsible for managing all 181 Army installations worldwide.

From lifetime achievement awards to Distinguished Service medals, he has received numerous accolades, but being selected as the 39th Black Engineer of the Year caught him off guard.

"I've been attending the conference for over 20 years, and I'd heard the stories and accomplishments of the past honorees and thought to myself, 'They were special.' So when I got the call, I had to call them back after I composed myself. I was shocked, but incredibly happy and proud to receive the award," he said.

Growing up in Chicago, Illinois, Johnson was self-motivated to excel both in the classroom and the community, seeking to escape what at times felt like a predetermined path. This latest honor is one he hopes to use to empower the next generation of students, especially those who may not have previously considered Georgia Tech.

"Where I came from, no one ever talked to me about being an engineer," he said. "In a city like Atlanta and other communities in Georgia, kids should look to us as their school. It's so important to bring them to campus from an early age to show them that they can get the highest-quality education right here and achieve great things."

Elevated to his current role in 2024, Johnson drives strategic priorities across the Institute, which include expanding access and removing barriers for financially vulnerable students and those traditionally underrepresented at Georgia Tech.

To accomplish this, he hopes to build upon the successes of partnerships with Atlanta Public Schools, summer camps, and a computer science initiative that reaches rural communities throughout the state.

Johnson has approached each leadership role he has taken on — commanding a battalion, brigade, and a division, overseeing thousands of soldiers and civilians in the USACE, or even serving as the National Basketball Association's first senior vice president of referee operations — with a willingness to learn and to empower the people around him.

"Just like military organizations, higher education institutions are very complex, so you have to trust your people, get out of the way, and provide them with the resources they need to be successful.”

Johnson's military training taught him to assess situations quickly and mobilize at a moment's notice. This was an asset when he led the Institute's recent search for a new athletic director amid a changing landscape in college athletics.

With experience leading an $18 billion rebuilding effort in Iraq and revitalization efforts following Hurricane Katrina, his expertise has been sought off campus as well. In 2024, he was appointed to the City of Atlanta working group seeking solutions for Atlanta's aging infrastructure after several water main breaks led to widespread boil water advisories across the city.

The desire to learn has always led Johnson to pursue new challenges. Having already completed a bachelor’s in mechanical engineering and mathematics from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point (1976), a master’s degree in operations research from Georgia Tech (1985), and a master’s in strategic planning from the School of Advanced Military Studies (1990), Johnson earned an Ed.D. in higher education management and leadership from the University of Georgia in 2023.

While his title has changed since arriving at Tech in 2013, sharing his experience with students remains a passion for Johnson, a professor of the practice in the H. Milton Stewart School of Industrial and Systems Engineering. He is an emeritus trustee for the Georgia Tech Foundation, served as a Georgia Tech Alumni Association trustee from 2015 to 2018, and has created an endowment for three undergraduate scholarships. Prior to joining the Institute, Johnson served on the Georgia Tech Advisory Board from 2005 to 2008 and spoke at Commencement in 2009.

Proud to represent himself and the Institute as the 2025 Black Engineer of the Year, Johnson is motivated to make a difference and says he will always "walk my talk" to do so.

New Minor Program Bridges Business, Sports, Entertainment

admin

This summer, students are pursuing a new minor at Georgia Tech: Business of Sports and Entertainment.

The collaboration between the Scheller College of Business and the Ivan College of Liberal Arts offers undergraduates a new way to explore new career paths and capitalizes on Georgia Tech’s proximity to sports and entertainment venues and industries.

Atlanta frequently hosts major events such as the College Football National Championship and is home to several professional sports teams. Meanwhile, the entertainment sector adds $14 billion annually to the state economy and supports more than 40,000 jobs, according to a 2021 TAG Media and Entertainment Ecosystem Report.

Richard "Dick" Bergmark, IM 1975, HON Ph.D. 2022, a former swimming and diving student-athlete who has directed his philanthropy to both academic and athletic initiatives, said he was thrilled to support the program.

“My management degree gave me the foundation for my career,” he said. “I’m thankful for both the academic and athletic experiences I had at Georgia Tech. Supporting the next generation is a great way for me to give back.”

The program requires:

15 credit hours.

Courses such as:

Sports and Entertainment Marketing.

Sports and Entertainment Law.

Science, Technology, and Sports.

A hands-on practicum.

Electives in digital marketing, revenue analytics, and entrepreneurship.

Learn more about the new program.

ASC Prepares to Welcome New Student Employees

admin

Thu, 07/24/2025 - 15:22

The Administrative Services Center (ASC) is looking forward to welcoming thousands of new student employees for the fall semester! To help them complete the hiring and onboarding process, the ASC will host the annual Student Employee Onboarding event at the Instructional Center (across from the Exhibition Hall). Students can sign up for a 30-minute time slot on the Student Employment website or walk up to the Instructional Center Aug. 13 – 15, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

This event is open to all graduate and undergraduate students who need to complete their in-person onboarding documents and I-9 verification requirements (e.g., Form I-9 verification and notarized Georgia Security Questionnaire). Original and unexpired documentation to prove eligibility to work in the United States must be provided during the event. A list of acceptable original and unexpired documents can be found here. Students should plan to attend if one of the following scenarios applies:

They have been hired at Georgia Tech for the first time.

They have not worked, logged time, or received a paycheck at Georgia Tech for the past two years.

They have previously been employed at Georgia Tech as a different employee type.

Need to Complete I-9 Verification but Cannot Attend This Event?
Student employees may also complete their in-person onboarding requirements at 755 Marietta Street prior to or following the event. Visit the Onboarding Documents and I-9 Verification webpage for more information.

Already Completed the Onboarding Documents and I-9 Verification Process?
Great! Student employees who have completed an onboarding appointment do not need to attend the Student Employee Onboarding event.

Other Important Notes
Student employees should complete their online onboarding documents before their in-person I-9 verification appointment. Step-by-step instructions to complete this process are available on the Georgia Tech Human Resources’ Student Onboarding webpage. This event is not an opportunity for students to find a campus job.

Hiring managers and their hiring support staff are encouraged to familiarize themselves with new and helpful resources designed to promote a seamless experience. Learn more here.

Questions?

Call the ASC at 404.385.1111.

Email the ASC at support@asc.gatech.edu.

For student employment eligibility inquiries, email Georgia Tech Human Resources Student Employment at student-employment@gatech.edu.

For information about the Onboarding Documents and I-9 Verification Process, visit the ASC website.
